NFC Contender Taking Its Time on Extending Their Franchise Quarterback

Cowboys have reportedly decided to be patient while working on a Dak Prescott extension, but not necessarily because they don’t want him. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN in a recent report said the following:

“I was told from a source with the team that the notion that the Cowboys don’t want to keep Dak Prescott beyond 2024, when he’ll be a free agent the next year, is false, that they still believe in him firmly. They want him long-term, but I would describe their pursuits at a contract extension so far as pretty passive. He’s got a $61 million cap hit this year, he’s got dead money next year, so he’s got a lot of leverage. So this will play out eventually, but they are committed to spending money, trying to re-sign some of their guys, Dak included.”

Dallas Cowboys Being Patient With Dak Prescott Extension

The Cowboys aren’t doing much this offseason so it is somewhat surprising that they haven’t worked towards an extension. Dak Prescott is coming off possibly the best season of his career in 2023. The Cowboys roster is full of talent and it’s ready to win now.

This offseason has only taken players away from what is one of the best rosters in football. If the Cowboys don’t make a move soon they could take a massive step back next year. The Cowboys recently restructured Prescott’s contract to give even more flexibility.

Could the Cowboys Look to Add a Quarterback in the Draft

According to recent reports, this may be an option for the team. This wouldn’t be an entirely bad idea as the NFL is unpredictable. This wouldn’t be the Cowboys taking a quarterback in round one, it would more likely be a mid-round pick.

If the team decides to draft a quarterback early, Michael Penix Jr. would be the ideal candidate. With a plethora of offensive weapons at his disposal, Penix would have the best opportunity to thrive. He would be in an excellent situation and could potentially succeed after a year of learning behind Prescott.

Another good fit could be Joe Milton from Tennesee, Milton is the most talented mid-round quarterback in the draft. Sitting behind Dak Prescott could give Milton the chance to develop as a more accurate and posied passer. This wouldn’t be a shocking move if the Cowboys decide to do it.

Other Options at the End of the Season

It seems that the Cowboys might consider trading for a veteran quarterback like Derek Carr, Geno Smith, or Daniel Jones if they want to add some experience to their team. However, it’s unlikely that they would pursue this option because Dak Prescott is better than any of the players who may become available at the end of the season.

If the Cowboys need to find a replacement for Dak Prescott, Trey Lance is the most likely candidate. Lance is a young quarterback selected third overall and may have another chance to prove himself. The 49ers didn’t give him many opportunities to start, so it’s still unclear if he’s an NFL-caliber quarterback. However, after spending two seasons learning from Prescott, it’s worth considering giving Lance a chance.

The Cowboys need to prioritize bringing back Prescott, regardless of other options that may arise. Prescott is undeniably a top-10 quarterback in the NFL and deserves to be compensated accordingly. With Mike McCarthy as head coach, Prescott’s performance has only improved, making it even more likely that the Cowboys will offer him the contract he deserves. The Cowboys should figure out the contract situation with Prescott before he gains more leverage.
